Learning to Listen

A School Program of Sound Exploration for kids 8-10

What is SOUND?

How do we LISTEN?

Our city, our neighborhood, our home, and our school are filled with sound—everyday noises, surprising tones, rich layers, and even hidden sounds waiting to be discovered.

"Learning to Listen" is an interactive workshop where students explore the phenomenon and beauty of sound through creative, hands-on activities. Designed as an introduction to sensory and aesthetic education, this programme helps children develop their ability to listen with intention and curiosity.

Through guided exercises, like sound quizes, sound maps and sound lists, students learn to:

  • Notice and differentiate a wide variety of sounds

  • Record and reflect on what they hear

  • Explore the soundscapes of their environment

  • Cultivate attention, imagination, and appreciation for sound as a form of art and expression

  • Develop deep listening as both a creative and social skill

This workshop, designed by WEAVE members Vassilis and Michalis, aims to support early learning in:

Music education | Sensory awareness | Environmental exploration | The art of dialogue and attentive listening

"Learning to Listen" forms part of the Music module at the Kakadiaris Greek-English Education School (Athens, Greece), which is taught by Vassilis.

The integration of this programme in a long format in this context allows us to build a rich curriculum and activity archive which follows the developmental progress of the specific school groups.
